At Iowa Breast Reduction, we understand that breast reconstruction is not merely a cosmetic procedure but a vital step in the journey toward physical and emotional healing for many women. Led by Dr. Andrews, our practice is committed to offering personalized, compassionate care and a comprehensive range of reconstructive options tailored to meet each patient’s unique needs.
What is Breast Reconstruction?
Breast reconstruction aims at rebuilding a breast’s shape and contour following mastectomy, lumpectomy, or other trauma affecting breast appearance. It is a critical option for women who have undergone breast cancer treatment or have a congenital deformity. Breast reconstruction aims to restore aesthetic symmetry and help patients regain a sense of wholeness and confidence in their bodies.
Dr. Andrews offers a comprehensive range of breast reconstruction options tailored to meet each patient’s unique needs and preferences:
Second Stage Breast Reconstruction
The second stage of breast reconstruction involves the removal of tissue expanders and the placement of permanent implants. Typically, tissue expanders are placed initially, followed by weekly expansions over three months before the permanent implants are inserted.
Patients often experience significant wait times for this procedure at local hospitals, but at Iowa Breast Reduction, we prioritize timely care for our patients.
Immediate Breast Reconstruction
Immediate breast reconstruction is performed simultaneously with a mastectomy, involving both a general surgeon and a plastic surgeon in the operating room. While Dr. Andrews performs this procedure, it is less common compared to delayed reconstruction.
Delayed Reconstruction
Delayed breast reconstruction is offered to patients who have previously undergone a mastectomy and either opted out of immediate reconstruction or were unable to undergo it due to prior cancer treatment; Dr. Andrews specializes in providing reconstructive options tailored to each patient’s individual journey.
Acellular Dermal Matrix (ADM)
Acellular dermal matrix is a bioengineered product that enhances breast shape and potentially reduces the risk of complications such as capsular contracture. Dr. Andrews effectively utilizes ADM with tissue expanders and implants to achieve optimal results.
Breast Reconstruction Revision
Dr. Andrews addresses various post-reconstruction issues through specialized revision procedures, including:
- Residual skin laxity
- Breast implant malposition
- Breast asymmetry
- Contour depressions, commonly corrected with fat grafting
- Implant exchange for improved contour and aesthetic outcomes
- Potential Complications
Capsular Contracture
Capsular contracture is a common long-term complication associated with breast implants, categorized according to the Baker Classification system:
- Baker Class I: Normal
- Baker Class II: Firm breast texture
- Baker Class III: Abnormal appearance and firmness
- Baker Class IV: Painful, distorted breast shape
Dr. Andrews performs corrective procedures for Baker Class III and IV contractures to restore natural breast aesthetics and alleviate discomfort.

see what you COULD look like
One of the hardest parts of getting cosmetic surgery is knowing what you’ll look like after the procedure is done. Our providers can describe the procedure and the results perfectly, but being unable to see it can make some patients apprehensive. With the Crisalix 3D Imaging software, you can actually see a visualization of your “after” pictures.
At Iowa Breast Reduction, we are proud to offer the Crisalix 3D imaging technology. This game-changing tool allows you to see your “after” before you ever schedule your procedure.
